For five years, Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas has been conducting what he calls, “a real-live experiment”. Brownback’s test, carried out with the GOP legislature in the state, includes slashing tax rates, eliminating state income tax for owner-operated businesses, and cutting government services. The goal? In Brownback’s own words it’s to inject “a shot of adrenaline into the heart of the Kansas economy”. This “experiment”, a.k.a. trickle-down economics, has proven disastrous for the state, and last week even the Republican-controlled legislature agreed by voting to restore tax rates to more moderate levels.
Back in 2010, right here in Pennsylvania, then Governor Tom Corbett began dabbling in his own version of this shaky science. How is this all playing out now with Governor Tom Wolf’s rejection of Corbett’s extreme agenda? In his recent post for the Third and State blog, Marc Stier discusses the “Wizard of Oz” economics being practiced in Harrisburg and its impact on citizens of the commonwealth.
