Letter: A vote for Republicans gives power to Trump

Longtime GOP supporter won't back party right now.

Editor:
Though a registered Republican since the 1970s, I couldn’t vote for egocentric Donald Trump in 2016, with his lack of qualifications and morals. I did support the Republican congressional candidates then, in the belief that they would put the country first in their legislation. I was wrong. With Trump in office and Republicans blind and/or afraid, the U.S. is moving down a ruinous path. Consider a few of Trump’s “accomplishments.”

Tax cut: Corporations and the top 1 percent benefited. But did regular people or their retirement accounts? Now the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget predicts the budget deficit will pass $1 trillion in 2019. Cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are being discussed.

Great health care: Republicans gutted Obamacare and wanted to eliminate pre-existing conditions protection. Current claims that they want coverage for pre-existing conditions do not mention affordability.

Safer world: Denuclearization of North Korea? That was only an expensive photo op. And the president is withdrawing from a nuclear arms treaty with Russia, as if the world needs more nukes.

Protect the environment: The planet’s climate needs more coal pollution? Even China is moving from coal to solar power. Pulling out of the Paris climate agreement? Really?

The world and the U.S. will be decades in recovery if the Republicans retain control of both houses with Trump in office. I support the Democrats in the midterms. If we can achieve some sanity and civiliy in government, I may vote Republican in the future. But not now.
