Letter: Court should act soon to make elections fair

Editor:

Gerrymandering is the biggest threat to fair elections and accurate representation of the American people. This corrupt system is unethical and undermines our democracy. But, sadly, it is legal. The only sure way to correct this is by U.S. Supreme Court action. We can't depend on partisan Congress to do the right thing. A case is before the Supreme Court challenging Wisconsin's severely gerrymandered districts. If the court overturns those districts, the ruling could apply to all gerrymandered states, including Pennsylvania, which is one of the worst.

Imagine fair, accurate elections nationwide that truly reflect what the American people want. Logical, right? Not so for Chief Justice John Roberts. He feels, for dubious reasons, that the court should not intervene.

Americans expect the Supreme Court to be the last bastion of truth and fairness, overriding the extreme partisanship of our elected officials. The court needs to hear from the people that gerrymandering is unacceptable, and we will not stand for a partisan Supreme Court shirking its duty.

I urge readers to write letters to Roberts - no emails or phone calls will be accepted - demanding swift action before the 2018 midterm elections to correct Wisconsin's districts. Start the ball rolling to end gerrymandering nationwide.
