As a registered nurse who works out in the community, I am gravely concerned about the lack of long-term funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, as well as the possibility of cuts to Medicare and Medicaid in 2018.
Many Republicans are eager to cut funding on programs they disparagingly call "entitlements" in order to pay for huge tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy. I would argue that these programs are human rights and the mark of a government that understands that children are our future, the chronically ill deserve our compassion and the elderly deserve to be cared for.
Right here in Berks County, I have seen elderly patients living on canned cat food because they had to choose between food or medicine. I have seen children die of whooping cough and measles because they did not have access to medical care. I have seen patients lose a limb because they could not get the necessary supplies to care for their chronic diabetes.
If our government were to cut funding for CHIP, Medicare and Medicaid, it would not only be irresponsible but unconscionably cruel. And I can tell you, from one who works on the "front lines" every day caring for patients in our communities, it is a very cold and cruel world out there. With a great deal of anger and despair, I say that policies favored by many Republicans currently in office are going to make it a lot colder and crueler in 2018.
