Letter: Gun control measures badly needed in U.S.

This senseless violence needs to come to an end.

Editor:

It's way past time to pass reasonable gun control legislation in the wake of the horrific massacre in Florida. I implore my elected officials to work with others in the House to enact sensible gun control legislation. There should be a ban on semiautomatic weapons and limits on large-capacity ammunition clips. In order to make it more difficult for people with mental illness to obtain weapons, a background check should be required in order for anyone to buy a gun, eliminating gun show loopholes

People cite the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but this is not an unlimited right. I claim the right to feel safe not only in my home but in schools, malls and movie theaters. Regulations are placed on driving, medications, food, drink, fertilizers and airline travel to name a few, yet we cannot touch gun ownership and use?

I call on my elected officials who have been hired to do a job representing the people. The nation is tired of this senselessness.

Are guns more important than our children? We want thoughts and prayers to be turned into thoughts and action. Now.
