Decision to rewrite redistricting measure deserves condemnation. Editor: The Republican-led House Committee on State Government showed its true colors by rejecting a much-needed House bill that could have ended gerrymandering in this state ("Last-minute GOP vote guts gerrymander-reform bill," Reading Eagle, April 12). What is wrong with these people? How can committee chairman Rep. Daryl Metcalfe sleep at night? This is just wrong. In rejecting the original HB 722 and replacing it with the same issues and problems that had made Pennsylvania the laughingstock of the country, with unfair and obvious gerrymandering, this committee's revision is a slap in the face of fairness and reform. HB 722 ensured a total nonpartisan and independent way to have future fair elections. It seems Metcalfe is harboring a grudge due to the state Supreme Court doing the right thing by redrawing the ridiculous old map. But I imagine he will eventually have regrets for attempting to keep the same broken system in place, when his party is no longer in power.
