Court's alternative far superior to plan approved by Republicans. Editor: Why this outrage by the Republican Party regarding congressional redistricting, and who is paying for the GOP lawsuits? For eight years, redistricting by Republicans has split up districts with razor-sharp algorithms identifying the party's base, ensuring that the GOP never loses a race and giving the party a 13-5 advantage in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation. And they say that is not gerrymandering? Redistricting never should be determined by any political party but instead should be the purview of an independent commission using unbiased scientific tools that include "compact, contiguous territory that does not divide any county, city or other political subdivision except when necessary to ensure equality of population" and thus fair elections for all. I submit that the new districts meet these requirements to a much greater degree than the new map that was submitted by Republican leaders.
