Having lost the fight to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Republican-led Congress seems happy to preside over the destruction of a system that serves millions of Americans, and to abandon the millions still without access to care. Whatever happened to liberty and justice for all? Access to health care is a human right recognized by other developed nations but not ours.
Medicare for all is the clear solution. Yes, health care for all would cost us, but so does giving a huge tax break to the 1 percent who will only invest it to increase their already huge fortunes. And so does spending trillions of dollars on a military budget that eclipses the combination of the world's military budgets. Not to mention building walls.
Come to think of it, why has Congress not reined in the pharmaceutical companies that are gouging the American people every day and contributing to an opioid crisis that has killed thousands of people?
I spend a lot of time in a country that has something like Medicare for all and have been the beneficiary of those services, and I can assure you that it works, just as our Medicare system works for all seniors in this country.
It is time for elected officials in this country to espouse American values and to care for those who have been left behind by the system, rather than their rich friends and corporate contributors.
