Letter: So-called Christians look the other way

Some all too eager to make excuses for president's questionable actions.

Editor:
While in office, President Barack Obama was vilified by a certain segment of the populace - many of them self-proclaimed "good Christians" - for committing such grievous offenses as using teleprompters, wearing "mom jeans" and putting mustard on his hamburgers.

President Donald Trump and his top officers invoked the Bible to lend credence to their efforts to dehumanize thousands of their fellow human beings (also known as God's children) and inflict unimaginable anguish and trauma by taking children from their parents and concentrating them in cages in camps.

I agree with Attorney General Jeff Sessions that we should enforce our laws, but I don't believe we need to traumatize and shatter the lives of desperate human beings to do it - no matter what they look like or where they come from. Sadly, the response of a certain segment of the populace - many of them self-proclaimed "good Christians" - has been to look the other way, condone or even encourage Trump's actions.

I'd like to believe it's a phenomenon the likes of which the world has never seen, but the adage "history repeats itself" now looms large.
