Dangerous semiautomatic firearms should be out of circulation for good.
I have used and owned guns since I was a teenager. I like to shoot guns. I want to see a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
An assault rifle is named appropriately. It is not a self-defense rifle or a hunting rifle. It is designed to kill and maim. Its high-velocity bullets can damage flesh inches away from its path of travel. I have heard of exit wounds the size of an orange. Compare the damage an AR-15 and a 9 mm handgun can do to the human body: "One looks like a grenade went off in there," Peter Rhee, a trauma surgeon at the University of Arizona, told Wiredmagazine. "The other looks like a bad knife cut."
It isn't just schools that are attacked. It is movie theaters, nightclubs, concerts and churches. Armed teachers can't cover them all.
The Second Amendment does not protect the assault rifle. It is not specific to any gun and if it were, it would probably have mentioned a musket.
The assault rifle was banned from 1994 to 2004, but the ban was allowed to expire. It should be banned again, permanently.
U.S. should renew assault weapons ban
